My mother, Founder Vashti Turley Murphy was not a journalist or the publisher of the Afro-American Newspapers -- her husband, Carl Murphy, had those titles.
She was not the mother of five Delta daughters-- she had five daughters, four of whom were Deltas.
In her own right, she started her career as a teacher, married, had five children, was a community activist, co-founder of the Baltimore Alumnae Chapter, was active in her church, St.James Episcopal; and was a co-founder of the Philomathians Club, a study group in Baltimore which means "Lovers of Learning".
She helped the homeless,
the mentally ill and women in trouble. She traveled around the world with her
husband and spoke to numerous Delta chapters.
