Arkansas State student shot, frat parties suspended

JONESBORO Ark. -- Arkansas State University has temporarily suspended fraternity and sorority parties after a student was injured in a shooting at the ASU Pavilion.

Kimberly McCray, 21, was injured at a Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity party early Saturday morning, according to a University Police Department report. The shot came from a semiautomatic handgun, the report said. McCray was taken to a hospital.

Rick Stripling, vice chancellor for student affairs, said, "All social activities in public facilities for sororities and fraternities are suspended until further notice."

University police were interviewing some of the hundreds of people who attended the party.

"Several people stated they heard a gunshot inside the pavilion and several shots fired outside the pavilion in the parking lot," the report said.

Officers Kenny Pigue and Donald Russell arrived around 1 a.m. Saturday to investigate. Jonesboro city police also were called to the scene.

"This is a random and rare act," said Lonnie Williams, associate vice chancellor for student affairs. "We're trying to work with our student organizations to produce a safe environment. Our main concerns are ASU students and constituents," Williams said.

ASU officials also said that nearly all of the student newspaper's latest issue were stolen. Bonnie Thrasher, adviser to The Herald, said a front-page report on Saturday's shooting was featured in the paper. But she didn't know if the thefts had something to do with the newspaper's coverage of the shooting.

Herald Editor Liberty Parks said extra papers were printed and would be redistributed.
