A former Emory University student filed a civil lawsuit against Kappa Alpha Psi fraternity and several former fraternity brothers Monday, alleging he was hazed and beaten during his time as a pledge.

Raymond McKoy said he was tortured by brothers who poured hot wax on his body, beat him with canes and paddles, and subjected him to humiliating behavior during his pledgeship with the Emory University chapter during the spring of 2003.

The lawsuit, filed in DeKalb Superior Court, said McKoy suffered brain damage and "emotional injury" and later withdrew from school as a result.

Benjamin Barrett, McKoy's attorney, said McKoy was a Woodruff scholar with a full scholarship to Emory before pledging Kappa Alpha Psi.

"This had a terrible impact," Barrett said.

Emory officials sanctioned the fraternity after the hazing was reported, college officials said.

The fraternity could not be reached for comment.
