Old Dominion University punishes students
for hazing incident

NORFOLK, Va. -- Old Dominion University expelled two students and suspended five in connection with a fraternity hazing in March.

The two expelled students, members of the Kappa Alpha Psi fraternity, injured at least one pledge, or would-be member, said Dana Burnett, the university's vice president for student services.

Burnett declined to give details of the injury, saying that would violate federal privacy laws. ODU has declined to identify any of the students.

In police statements, the victims said they were kneed in the chest, slapped in the face, hit in the shins and beaten on the buttocks with a cane.

One pledge was hospitalized after complaining of chest pains and loss of breath. The student has recovered, Burnett said.

Of the nine fraternity members who faced university charges, two were expelled this week, four were suspended for one semester, one was suspended for two semesters and one was exonerated, Burnett said. The case is pending against the ninth student.

The fraternity chapter is closed.

Burnett said ODU will relay information about the expelled students to the city Commonwealth's Attorney office, which will consider criminal charges.
