The injured 20-year-old student was admitted to Sparrow Hospital on Friday, a day after the incident, complaining of severe back pain. He required kidney dialysis. He remained hospitalized Wednesday, university spokesman Terry Denbow said today. Neither he nor the hospital gave any details.
The other Phi Beta Sigma member was not seriously hurt. Neither was identified.
The incident began when the two entered into a hitting contest to determine who was toughest, chapter president Raynard Dennis said. Police said the contest spanned several hours the night of March 3-4.
``It wasn't hazing,'' said Dennis, who didn't witness the incident. ``It was something that occurred amongst brothers.''
``A lot of times it has to do with male pride.''
Phi Beta Sigma's national organization suspended the chapter pending an investigation, Denbow said.
Campus police said they were investigating the incident as an assault. No charges were filed immediately.
EAST LANSING, Mich. (AP) -- A duel between two Michigan State University fraternity brothers to see which one was the tougher has left one hospitalized and the fraternity suspended.
