KAPPA ALPHA PSI FRATERNITY, INC.
Philadelphia, PA, April 14, 1998 - While it would be inappropriate to
comment on the incident itself, due to having only very sketchy
information at this time, our hearts sincerely go out to the injured
students.
Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc. prays for the speedy recovery of its
members at the University of Maryland Eastern Shore who have been
hospitalized with physical injuries. It is our hope that they will
return to full health. Our concern extends to their parents and
families during this difficult time.
All of the injured young men were duly initiated members of the
Fraternity. They attained full membership status on March 8, 1998.
Since that day they have had no obligation to meet any additional
requirements for continuing membership other than their continued
successful matriculation at the University and their refraining from
participating in antisocial conduct. At no time (before their
initiation or after) has submission to physical abuse been a condition
for obtaining membership.
Kappa Alpha Psi is deeply disturbed at the regrettable events that have
interrupted these students' course of study. Upon their return to
complete health and to school we hope to discuss with them the events
which led to their hospitalization and take appropriate action based
upon the facts. Since circumstances will not permit discussion with
these young men at the present time, further comments on this matter
should be based upon complete information and therefore would be
speculative and thus inappropriate. Consequently, no further comment
will be made at this time.
Again, we wish for the best possible outcome for our injured Brothers.
Our prayers are truly with them.
